Allen Memorial Library Moves Into New Space

The Allen Memorial Library, a/k/a the Hartt Music Library, has moved into a new space.  What was formerly known as the main library on campus, the Mortensen Library, has been renamed the Walter Harrison Libraries, which now includes a section called Mortensen Library.  The Harrison Libraries now houses the Allen Library in what used to be the lower level of Mortensen.  The back wall of this space was blown out, new floor to ceiling windows were installed, and the space was reconfigured to serve Hartt's music, dance and theatre students and faculty.  Although still a work in progress, here are some photos.

Did you know that Hartt alumni have use and borrowing privileges in the Allen Library?  See the library website for details.

Here is your mini virtual tour.

As you walk down the stairs from the main level of Mortensen, here is the entrance signage to the new Allen Library.
Turn left and a staff workspace is visible through the window and you can see through the library space out the back windows.
In we go through the entrance and turn right to the circulation desk.

Looking past the work tables and the computer study stations.  (Bonus if you can identify the Hartt alumnus just beyond the computers from the back of his head.)

The Jack Elliott Legacy Project

Who doesn't recall that bass line from the start of the Barney Miller theme?  (Don't tell me if you are too young to remember Barney Miller.)  I bet you can still recall the theme song to Night Court.

Born Irwin Elliott Zucker, “Jack” Elliott graduated from what is now The Hartt School in 1951, where he later was awarded an honorary doctorate and was named Alumnus of the Year (1995), and he studied composition with Isadore Freed, Arnold Franchetti, Bohuslav Martinů, and Lukas Foss.  He worked as a jazz pianist in New York and Paris in the 1950s.  Later, having been sought by Hollywood for his skill as an arranger, he moved to California to launch a celebrated career in television.  His run in television earned him the distinction of being one of Hollywood’s top composers and arrangers, and for having become the musical director of choice for big events, such as the Academy and the Emmy Awards.  He served as music director for the Grammy Awards for 30 years.  His most well-known television work includes the theme songs to Night Court, Charlie’s Angels, and Barney Miller.

In the 1970s, Elliott co-founded the Foundation for New American Music, which commissioned symphonic jazz works for performance by the celebrated classical and jazz performers of the New American Orchestra (later the American Jazz Philharmonic).  He founded the Henry Mancini Institute in 1997, serving as music director until his death in 2001.

Streaming Hartt Performances Online

Hartt Performances Streaming on the Web

Did you know that some Hartt performances are now accessible by live streaming online?

Alumni know that Hartt has a vast collection of recordings of performances at the school.  Many are available at the Allen Memorial Library.  The Allen library’s website is accessible here. http://library.hartford.edu/universitylibraries/allen_library.aspx

Also, if you would to own a copy of a specific recording, you can contact the Hartt Recording Studio to order a recording.  Link is here.  http://harttweb.hartford.edu/about/services/purchase.aspx

Now, certain performances are being streamed live!

With streaming, you can listen to the live performance as it is happening.  Most of us would rather listen to a live concert in person, but if you cannot make it to the performance, or if the concert is sold out, you may have the option to stream the concert from the comfort of your home.

This Saturday, at 1:00, you are invited to the saxophone recital of DMA candidate Collete Hall in Millard Auditorium.  But, if you cannot attend in person, you can stream the live performance.

Here is what you will Collete perform:
Lessons of the Sky - Rodney Rogers
Like Lightnings - Hilary Tann
Sonata - Edison Denisov
Distances Within Me - John Anthony Lennon
Klonos - Piet Swerts

You can check out future streaming performances here.
